Following a period of some confusion surrounding the issue, it has finally been confirmed that citizenship will be a compulsory subject at Key Stages 3 and 4 from September 2014. The relevant, updated programmes of study have been released – and in order to help support teachers in delivering these, National Citizen Service (NCS) and the Association for Citizenship Teaching (ACT) have worked together to launch a range of new materials, designed to help enthuse students and raise awareness of ways they can make a difference in their communities through activities that can be linked to GCSE Citizenship Studies and the National Curriculum. They will also enable schools to play an informed role in encouraging active citizenship among their students, and to help prepare students to participate in the NCS programme, which builds the skills and confidence of 16-17 year olds to help them get ahead in work and life.
