According to new research from Nominet, the not-for-profit organisation responsible for the smooth running of the .uk internet, despite being interested in companies like Google and Facebook, girls still tend to think, on the whole, that a career in IT would be ‘too geeky’, and are uninspired by the teaching of the subject in school, with 65% of 13-24 female students saying that their ICT education had in no way affected their career aspirations.
In order to help address this issue, Nominet has launched a competition in association with e-skills UK’s Computer Clubs for Girls (CC4G), which will enable 12 UK schools to have a CC4G for a year, for free. The organisation will also contribute online training programmes with activities including designing websites for a fan page or an imaginary business, and creating viral videos as part of an exercise to envisage what will be the next internet trend to sweep the nation.
To be in with a chance of benefiting from this great resource, and maybe changing a few female minds about the career potential of ICT, email cc4ghelpdesk@e-skills.com explaining in just 200 words why your school deserves this sponsorship.
