New journalistic writing competition launched by the National Literacy Trust for secondary schools

The National Literacy Trust has teamed up with the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) to launch a free competition to engage young people aged 11-16 with writing and provide interesting opportunities for teaching and learning around copyright law.

To enter, students must put themselves in the shoes of a journalist and research and write a feature article for a newspaper or magazine on an issue that they’re passionate about. The winning entry will be chosen by a judging panel that includes journalist and blogger Maurice McLeod and First News Editor Nicky Cox. The winning article will be published in First News, the weekly newspaper for young people – which has a weekly readership of 1 million. The winning student(s) will also receive book vouchers and a tablet computer for themselves and a journalistic writing workshop from Bim Adewunmi, professional journalist and Guardian Masterclasses tutor, for their school.

Every school that takes part in the My Words, My World competition can also access resources to support them in running the competition at school. These include film clips of professional journalists sharing their writing experiences, and curriculum-supporting teaching ideas and student handouts.
