Free support to improve school meal take-up

The Department for Education has asked national school food experts the Food for Life Partnership to work with junior and secondary schools (including PRU, SEN, academies and free schools) with take up of school meals below national average in the North, the Midlands and London to improve their meal numbers as part of the delivery of the School Food Plan - other regions are being supported by the Children’s Food Trust. The Plan cited the need for schools to address health issues caused by poor diet.

Not only will this help ensure the long-term viability of a school meal service, increasing access to good school food and has the potential to support health and wellbeing priorities around healthy weight and reducing health inequalities. Furthermore this support has the potential to kick-start a process of improving behaviour, attainment and attendance at the same time.

Benefits of the programme:

* Regional support

* Tailored action plan

* School leader and cook training

* Brand new resources

Support is available for one thousand schools in the North, the Midlands and London with the aim of increasing and maintaining a five percentage point increase in school meal take up.

Each eligible school will receive FREE support designed to kick-start an increase in school meal numbers and ensure more children benefit from a healthy lunch. Each package is worth over £2,000 and includes four training events for either school leaders or caterers and school cooks, a tailored action plan and access to specialist regional staff.
