Jeremy Sutcliffe is not a school leader. Nor is he a teacher. He is, however, a well-respected freelance education writer, editor and communications consultant, and former associate editor of the TES – very used to talking to educators, therefore, and analysing what they have to say. Here, he uses his skills, experience and contacts to try and answer the question: what are the qualities needed to be a successful school leader? The result is a fascinating collection of ideas, research, and anecdotes, all pulled together with Sutcliffe’s sure touch, and presented in a way that is as accessible as it is inspiring. Instead of ‘government-led initiatives’ and ‘top-down models’, you get real school leaders talking frankly about what really works. It’s descriptive rather than prescriptive, in other words, and as such, an inspiring read for teachers at any stage in their career.
